Hearing God's word amid the silence

Where does one go where silence and quietness is valued and practiced? One nearby place is the Monastery of the Holy Spirit just a few miles away in Conyers. This monastery was established in 1944 when 21 Trappist monks arrived in rural Georgia to begin a new community devoted to God's word and the contemplative life.

In the grand moments, and not so grand, God is always with us

"God showed up at 4 o'clock this afternoon." The delegate to the recent General Conference of The United Methodist Church was referring to the announcement of the Judicial Council that shocked everyone.

What is our attitude today?

Easter has passed. For one more year, we celebrated Resurrection of Jesus. We sang, "Up from the grave He arose with a mighty triumph o’er His foe. He arose victorious from the dark domain and He lives forever with His saints to reign.”
That was yesterday. Where are we and what is our attitude today?

Pray for those involved with General Conference

It begins in 47 days in Tampa. The United Methodist Church’s top legislative body, the General Conference, convenes April 24-May 4.from around the world--988 of them--will set policy and direction for the church, as well as handle other business. Changing your life forever in 15 minutes a day

I was brought up on the King James Bible. It was the only Bible I knew for years.  I grew up in a religious environment that strongly encouraged memorization of scripture, a tradition we would do well to claim or re-claim. There was a “memory verse” for every Sunday School lesson and many people committed large sections of scripture to memory, all in 17th century King James English.

Action Ministries enables individuals to make a difference

It was a long time ago that I saw my first television special on World Hunger. The scenes that were presented and the accompanying facts of hunger among the world’s population were overwhelming. I was stirred by the enormous need but felt helpless to make a difference.

We must be faithful to the task

The final score is 59-0. You are the coach of the team that did not score. What do you say to your players after the game and over the next few days?

It would be easy to criticize and blame. You could point out all the mistakes that were made and the opportunities were missed. You could rant and rave and probably no one would blame. But would any of that help you or the team?

Neither throw out the past nor be bound by it

If you have been to Augusta, Georgia you know that Washington Road and Gordon Highway are main thoroughfares into downtown but they present a very different picture from the beauty of Walton Way.

God is not put off by our questions

Is there a parent alive who has not been irritated by a child’s persistent question, “Why?”?
And, be honest, how many parents have replied, “Because I said so.”
Questions can be bothersome, but they are essential to learning.

Chaos, heartbreak and grace all evident in Japan disaster

“We are all OK” was the message when I opened my email on Friday morning, March 11.
The message was from my son in Tokyo and he was reassuring me that the he and his family had been spared the disaster that had happened while I slept.

Discipline is an indispensable ingredient

Discipline is an indispensable ingredient if life is to be lived to the fullest. It is necessary if a person is going to reach their potential. That is true whether in athletics, academics, entertainment, or life in general.
Discipline is developing and maintaining good habits. It is not simple but it is essential.
