Just Thinking.... Dateline: Portugal

Dana Everhart

Bishop Watson asked David Naglee and me to represent him at  the 145th Synod of the Methodist Church in Portugal last week, April 21-24. This was a trip that full of incidents and full of blessings.  Before I knew of this trip, I had planned for some outpatient surgery at Emory Dermatology. The surgery was pretty invasive (if you ask me ... it is my face, after all) and required stitches with the biggest bandage I have ever seen. I felt like Quasimodo. From the surgery I went to meet David and ...

Dana Everhart

Just Thinking ...  "Have you heard who's going to ...." "I Heard It Through The Clergy Grapevine" I bet you're wonderin' how I knew 'Bout your plans to make me blue With some other church you hoped before Between the two of us places You know I loved you more It took me by surprise I must say When I found out yesterday Don't you know that I heard it through the clergy grapevine Not much longer would you be mine Oh, I heard it through the clergy grapevine Oh, I'm just about to lose my mind ...

Just Thinking... How Is It with Your Body and Soul?

Dana Everhart

"How is it with your body and soul?" This is the question that we, as Cabinet members, are asked each time we gather. Bishop Watson has faithfully asked us for my entire 5 years, "How is it with you body and soul?" He takes this from Mr. Wesley, obviously, as it was a question that John Wesley put to all those in his Cell Groups. (Don't worry. I'm not talking about our Cell Groups today!) Well, even Mr. Wesley did not think of this himself; he got it from scripture. In the third epistle of John,...

Just Thinking... about General Conference

Dana Everhart

There are so many agenda items coming before our General Conference in May. Yes, you read correctly, in May, only 5 weeks away! As I hear conversations that pertain to the General Conference, I am hearing a lot of negative thoughts, prophesies, and conjecture. "It will be a repeat of Tampa!" "The Church will split!" "The powers that be always get their way." It will be no surprise if the General Conference is a failure if we approach it with such negative thought.  Philippians 4:8 and 9  (NRSV)...

Just Thinking... Recognizing the Risen Jesus

Dana Everhart

Just Thinking  - From Courtney T. Ball as published in Ministry Matters You may not recognize Jesus this Easter Mary Magdalene thought he was a gardener. Cleopas and his friend on the road to Emmaus mistook Jesus for a fellow traveler until he broke bread with them. When Jesus stood on the shoreline and called out to his fishing disciples, Peter and the others could not recognize him. John writes that when the eleven first saw the risen Jesus, they believed they had seen a ghost. And then ...

Just Thinking... about Holy Week

Dana Everhart

Just Thinking  - Holy Week 2016   "To be deeply Christian is to know and to live out the conviction that the whole human family dwells continuously at the intersection of time and eternity... The abiding conviction that history and eternity continuously intersect is grounded in the most basic of Christian affirmations. For our scriptures insist that in the days of Emperor Augustus the eternal Word of God became flesh and dwelt among us, born in Bethlehem when Quirinius was governor of Syria. ...

Just Thinking... A Prophetic Word, Maybe?

Dana Everhart

Please, can we not stop the hate?!? I am so weary of our presidential campaigning and the attitude of so many of those who call themselves "Christians,"  Where in scripture are we suppose to hate our enemies? Where does Jesus say, "It's okay to throw mud and to slander one another in the name of democracy?" I am not writing today to espouse one candidate over the other; that is not my place as each of us have convictions that we must hear and adhere to as we prepare to elect the leader of the...

Just Thinking... Continuing on the Lenten Journey

Dana Everhart

Just Thinking ...   How is your Lenten journey progressing? Are you still giving up what you gave up? Are you stilling keeping on with what you took on? Are you looking at yourself and your spiritual life daily? Anyone fasting?  Lent is a time that shares with us a variety of spiritual disciplines to draw us closer to the Cross of Christ. Maybe that is why we don't work really hard at keeping the journey alive and fresh; we don't want to arrive at the Cross. We would rather arrive at Easter, ...

It's the most wonderful time of the year With the SPRC not telling And everyone asking you "What do you hear?" It's the most wonderful time of the year It's the anx- anxious season of all With those "where are you going" greetings and happy cabinet meetings When gossip starts to fall It's the anx - anxious season of all And thus, it begins.
