Change First

Terry Walton

I Was Thinking… Several years ago Sharon and I had the opportunity to travel to London, England.  My brother was stationed just outside of London while serving in the United States Air Force.  While visiting with he and his family we visited several sights one being Westminster Abbey.  The following words were found inscribed on the tomb of an Anglican Bishop buried there: “When I was young and free and my imagination had no limits, I dreamed of changing the world.  As I grew older and wiser, ...

Just Thinking... Ending Strong

Dana Everhart

I'm hoping to end strong.  There is so much happening, and so many things to accomplish. My heart is beginning to be weary by it all and by the impossibility of ending strong. How can I do all I need to do to make sure that the Atlanta Emory District is poised to take next step and to move to a new level of service to Christ Jesus our Lord? I guess after six years you all understand that I set high standards for myself and strive to be the best I can be for you, for the Church, and for Christ....

I Was Thinking… So how was your Monday?  Mine was spectacular.  Not to brag but I spent the morning checking off an item on my ‘bucket list’.  Since my first experience in the Holy Land I found myself mesmerized by the Judean Wilderness.  I had always wanted to spend some reflective time there and yesterday was my day.  I hiked 3.5 miles in the Judean Wilderness ending in Jericho.  It was inspiring. I am convinced that I don’t spend enough time in silent reflection.  While today I was hiking ...

Just Thinking...Reflections from the Holy Land

Dana Everhart

Just Thinking ...  The Holy Land is full of emotions for me. I was here 19 years ago with Bishop Fitzgerald. A great deal has changed. The Dead Sea has gotten smaller, more jars with scrolls have been found in Quran, the traffic has doubled, and the haves and have nots are more so.  We are blessed with Jimmy, our tour guide, and with Hassim, our driver. They are taking great care of us and giving great nuggets of truth. Jane Brooks is leading our group well, and Bishop Sue is helping us laugh ...

Agony of Defeat

Terry Walton

Agony of Defeat I Was Thinking… Why am I so depressed over a football game?  I remember the theme for ABC’s ‘Wide World of Sports’ years ago… “The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat”.  I’m in agony!  I wanted the Atlanta Falcons to win the Super Bowl.  Why was it so important that the Atlanta Falcons win?  Let me propose a few reflections. It was our turn to win!  The Patriots have had their turn on several occasions.  They are champion hogs!  It was our turn!  The City of Atlanta (my ...

Rise Up!

Terry Walton

I Was Thinking…   Who’d a thunk it?  That’s a phrase I’ve heard throughout my life.  I know it is not a favorite phrase of the sophisticated and the educated.  It is a phrase for those who are looking for a creative way to convey surprise.  It is a colloquial phrase for ‘who would have thought this could have ever happened?’  It is a phrase that expresses the arrival of something that was against the odds. The Atlanta Falcons… ‘Who’d a thunk it?’  This week is Super Bowl week and the Atlanta ...

Just Thinking... So Many Things...

Dana Everhart

Just Thinking... My brain is overrun with an assortment of thoughts today. I think I must have been the only one not able to attend the Fresh Expressions event on Wednesday, February 25th. There was so much excitement, so many posts on Facebook and Twitter sharing the amazing quotes and comments from all the participants. I realize that with only 250 (plus) in attendance on Wednesday, some 1,000 of us UMC pastor need to sign up for the next offering. Until then I look forward to learning from...

Just Thinking... Towards a Dimly-lit Future

Dana Everhart

As I write this I am looking out my hotel window at Epworth By The Sea. We have completed three days of training with Bishop Hope Morgan Ward and Dean Elaine Heath. The theme was Wisdom from the Galatians for the Anxious Church. I will confess to you that it was great material. I was charged by Bishop Morgan Ward's sermons, and I was made most uncomfortable by Dean Heath's understanding of the future church (that is here today).   Bishop Morgan Ward reminded us that we are the light and cannot ...

Our Worst Storms

Terry Walton

Our Worst Storms I Was Thinking… What is the worst storm you’ve ever experienced?  Some have been in hurricanes and tornadoes (as was the case in South Georgia this weekend).  Others have been in blizzards and dust storms.  My worst storm would have to be the day I was struck by lightning (now I know what you’re thinking… “that explains why Terry is a little off center”).  One week in July of 1993 I was a “Summit Guide” at Camp Glisson.  My responsibility was to the 5th and 6thgraders that ...

"Peace On Earth"

Terry Walton

“Peace on Earth”   I Was Thinking…   What is the difference between a “peace-maker” and a “peace-keeper”?  The answer to such a question could hinge greatly on context but generally speaking I think there is an important difference.  Since I have arrived in this position of “Chief Missional Strategist” (the new job description for District Superintendents) I have been reading a book entitled “The Rule of Benedict: A Spirituality for the 21st Century” by Joan Chittister.  I recommend it to you ...
