A Worship Celebration: Welcoming General Board of Global Ministries to Georgia
A service of welcome and hospitality is set for Sunday, January 11, at 6:00 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Atlanta to officially welcome the General Board of Global Ministries to Georgia.
Bishop James King of the South Georgia Conference will preach the service, which will include communion and celebrate ministry that is truly global. Bishop Mike Watson of the North Georgia Conference, Thomas Kemper, General Secretary of the General Board of Global Ministries, and other representatives from Global Ministries, will participate in the service.
"What a joy it will be to worship together and celebrate the mission of the General Board of Global Ministries as we prepare to work alongside the staff right here in Georgia," said Bishop Watson.
Within two years, the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries will move from its longtime headquarters at the Interchurch Center in New York and move south to Atlanta. It expects to purchase and renovate the Grace UMC complex on Ponce de Leon Avenue for its headquarters, with the congregation continuing to worship there.
"This service is an outward expression to the General Board and its staff that we are excited they are coming and will help with the transition in any way that we can," said Bishop King.
The Georgia based headquarters will have mission responsibilities in the United States. In a new configuration for the agency, staff will be also be assigned to three new regional offices in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
All United Methodists are invited to the January 11 worship celebration which is being hosted by GBGM, Grace UMC, and the South Georgia and North Georgia Conferences.
