Wiley Stephens to preach on Day1
The Rev. Dr. B. Wiley Stephens, senior pastor of Dunwoody UMC, is the featured preacher Oct. 7 and 14 on “Day 1,” the nationally syndicated ecumenical radio program also accessible online at Day1.org.
Stephens’ sermon for Oct. 7, based on Jesus’ teachings on divorce in Mark 10:2-13, is entitled “A Call to a Higher Standard.” “It is so easy to hear [Jesus’ words] as words of judgment and condemnation,” he says. “But let us hear them as a call to a higher standard, the goal that we all have for marriage. We may not all reach that goal, but that is our aim…. Let these words of Jesus be a call to us to do all we can to weather the storm.”
His message for Oct. 14, “Sticker Shock for the Soul,” is based on the story of Jesus’ encounter with a wealthy man in Mark 10:17-27. “Don’t go to God in prayer and not expect a challenge, a push to grow or a change in your faith journey. And the risk, as for the man in the gospel story, is sticker shock for the soul. What we had understood as sufficient is only a beginning to something greater.”
The program includes interviews with Stephens conducted by Peter Wallace, who is also executive producer.
“Day 1” has been broadcast every week for more than 67 years, formerly as “The Protestant Hour.” Featuring outstanding preachers from the mainline denominations, “Day 1” is currently distributed to more than 200 radio stations across America and overseas. The program is produced by the Alliance for Christian Media, based in Atlanta.
