This year, the National Retail Federation estimates Americans will spend $525 billion on Christmas presents. United Methodist Communications invites everyone to Rethink Church and Reclaim Christmas by simplifying the season and spending time helping others, instead of spending money.
“Our hope is that we can all experience something more meaningful by embracing the love and hope that was shared more than 2,000 years ago by sharing some personal time and working with those in our communities facing difficult times and experiencing hardships,” said the Rev. Larry Hollon, general secretary of United Methodist Communications.
At the re-designed RethinkChurch.org, visitors can discover opportunities for supporting people facing hard times, find ways to simplify their lives, pledge to Reclaim Christmas and invite friends on social networks to join the effort, and search a customized listing of local church-hosted events, including service projects, free meals and candlelight services.
In addition, visitors can get a free download of the classic Christmas song “Away in a Manger” performed by award-winning country music duo Joey + Rory. “Away in a Manger” is from A Farmhouse Christmas—a collection of acoustic and traditional country-leaning Christmas recordings released by Joey + Rory in 2011.
“There’s something about Christmas that brings out the best in all of us,” said Rory Feek, who along with his wife, Joey, have just launched The Joey+Rory Show on RFD-TV. “Every year around that time, Joey and I sit down and take a look at our priorities and we make plans to simplify our lives and get closer to God. With all the holiday fun with Santa and Rudolph, we can’t forget, that it’s the baby Jesus in a manger that’s really the ‘reason for the season.’”
Rethink Church will advertise the Reclaim Christmas campaign regionally on outdoor billboards and cinema and nationally on digital and mobile channels and outlets, including a Cyber Monday takeover on Pandora Internet Radio.
