Vital Congregations: Bethel UMC Atlanta Helps After Hurricane

From Rev. Michael Stinson
Bethel UMC, Atlanta

After Superstorm Sandy hit the northeast United States, many of the members from Bethel UMC wanted to help.

Several men volunteered to make the trip north to assist those in need. An 8-person team was formed to leave the next Thursday. On Wednesday, the news came from UMCOR that volunteers should stay home. Instead, they needed flood buckets.
The news left many disappointed, but Dr. Curtis Dilworth, the Missions Chair, decided to change course and focus on flood buckets. Now everyone could be involved.

The church was energized by the idea! Funds were collected and supplies were donated. Finally we had enough of everything to assemble the buckets.

The Youth & Children's Ministry, headed by Mrs. Darlene Neely & Mrs. Kristen Folsom, organized an assembly line and before we knew it 26 buckets were completed.

The buckets and the families that would receive them were prayed for and the buckets were shipped to an UMCOR warehouse to be distributed. We are still in prayer for the families affected by Sandy.
