Camp Collinswood on Lake Oconee, a ministry of Aldersgate Homes. opened and dedicated a new cottage on Saturday, March 14, adding to the facilities at Collinswood. Bishop B. Michael Watson joined with the Aldersgate/Collinswood Board of Directors and guests for the event.
Following a Service of Dedication, the new cottage was officially named the Ruth Manning Cottage, honoring long-time Board member and volunteer Ruth Parham Manning. Manning's many contributions to the ministry of Aldersgate and Collinswood with and to persons with developmental disabilities cover many areas but Aldersgate Homes is especially appreciative of her great desire to raise funds that enable enhancements at Collinswood that assist in making it a universally accessible as well as beautiful place.
Rooms within the cottage were dedicated as well. One was dedicated to Alicia Marie Collier, who was a resident in an Aldersgate home for more than 12 years. Along with her mother, Mary Alice Collier, Alicia was active at Cascade UMC. Alicia died of cancer in June 2014. Another remembered with a room dedication was Cheryl Lynn Nelson, daughter of Rev. Jack and Jackie Nelson. Cheryl is especially remembered for her love of people and animals.
Collinswood now encompasses three cottages with beds for 60 people, a conference / dining hall with a commercial kitchen, an open air pavilion, a lighted basketball court, sand volleyball court, shuffleboard court and open meadow for games and sports at the front end of the 27 acres. The nature trail leads to the waterfront where there is a gazebo, bathhouse, fire pit with benches, and the prettiest dock on Lake Oconee.
