Get to Know Aldersgate Homes and Collinswood

By Becky Bocian

Aldersgate Homes and Collinswood are a related agency of the North Georgia Conference in ministry to persons with Developmental Disabilities. We reach out to you on behalf of those whose abilities do not include independence and self-sufficiency.  Your gifts go a long way to supporting Aldersgate / Collinswood's ministries to persons with developmental disabilities. At Aldersgate and Collinswood we seek to serve the Disability Community through advocacy, education, awareness of needs for inclusion and participation, and enhancing community connections for persons with developmental disabilities and their families, friends, faith congregations and communities.

Camp Collinswood is a camp and retreat center located on Lake Oconee in the Buckhead community, five miles north of Interstate 20 between Madison and Greensboro. This central location is about a one and a half hour drive from Atlanta, Macon, Augusta and Columbus.

Camp Collinswood is 27 acres offering green meadows, wooded trails and lakefront vistas. Facilities include three 5-bedroom cottages each with bed space for 20 people, three bathrooms with separate shower and vanity areas, equipped kitchenettes and open living areas. The dining hall includes a full commercial kitchen, laundry and storage area and dining/meeting space for 60 plus. An open air, covered pavilion has electricity, ceiling fans, a fireplace, built in seating and picnic tables and several grills. A lighted recreation area holds a basketball court, sand volleyball and shuffle board courts and an open paved area for skating or other activities. The meadows invite ballgames, Frisbee contests and numerous other fun outdoor games.

A wooded nature trail and a paved drive both take one to the lakefront area. The distance is an easy walk, about the length of a football field. The trail curves around so that suddenly the lake view opens ahead! At the lake, a bathhouse provides facilities and storage, the gazebo offers bi-level picnic tables accommodating wheelchairs, and the open fire pit with seating is a special place for watching the sun rise over the lake, holding vespers and quiet meditation. The U shaped dock with side rails is the most beautiful dock on the lake. And the fishing is good!

At Collinswood, everything is universally accessible. The showers are roll-in, the pathways are paved, the nature trail is a raised ramp with scattered seating for rest. The dock is totally wheelchair accessible and safe. There is a gate on the lake side of the dock offering wheelchair access to accessible pontoon boats.

Everyone is invited to Collinswood, an ideal setting for small to medium groups seeking to get away from the hustle bustle of everyday routines without having to go great distances. The facilities at Collinswood were specifically built to be welcoming to persons with mobility issues but open and available to all.

While we do not provide a food service, the cottage kitchenettes, dining hall commercial kitchen and outdoor grills allow for onsite food preparation. Additionally, there are excellent restaurants in the area for both eating in and take out and catering services nearby.

Facilities can be rented by the night or by the week. Rates are reasonable for everyone with some discounting available for groups serving persons with disabilities. For information regarding rates and availability, please call our main office at (404) 327-9491. We will be happy to work with you!
