THE RIVER UNITED METHODIST CHURCH TO GO CAMPING FOR A CAUSE
The
The proceeds from the campout will be given in the form of micro-loans to people in developing countries. These loans will be made through an organization called Kiva. “Kiva is the world's first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend directly to unique entrepreneurs around the globe. Kiva's mission is to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty.” (from Kiva.org).
Members of The River United Methodist Church are excited to be able to offer help people living in poverty around the world. A special prize will be given to the person or family who raises the most funds through either collecting donations or bringing other participants. The winner will spend the night in the “luxury tent,” enjoying a comfortable air mattress, breakfast in bed, and a beautiful view of the lake.
Microcredit is an important way for individuals, families and groups in developing nations to build businesses and improve their lives. It can encourage economic growth and create sustainable income for families and villages in areas of pervasive poverty. We are very happy to be able to help families directly by supplying funds for these loans” says Rev. Nancy Johnson, pastor at The River United Methodist Church. “This is what we are all about.”
The River UMC has already been active in the community, most recently by holding their first annual Family Festival to raise funds for handicap accessible swings that will be placed in area parks. The church has also sponsored a faith-based book club at Barnes and Noble at The Avenue, lead a discussion group called Barstool Theologians, and held special worship services including a Blessing of the Animals and a service of “Prayers for Learning” at the start of the school year. Worship services are held every Sunday at 11:00am, at
