2012 Annual Conference

Common Ground Grand Opening Weekend

Connexion UMC at North Covington opened a coffee house next door to their church. They held a successful grand opening weekend January 8-10. The coffee shop is a nonprofit that serves Safehouse Coffee and features local musicians in the evenings.

Dances with the Stars 2015

The winner of the 2015 Dances with the Stars is Hannah Garrett Johnson and Robert Tolentino for the Judge's Choice! Taking home the People's Choice award for the most votes is Jody Alderman and his partner, Kari Carter! And the Bird of Courage award goes to Kyle "Honey" Larsen who danced after several trips to the ER. She and her clergy dance partner, Don Saliers, danced the quick step.

Room Service Atlanta recently brought in 30 of Atlanta's top interior designers to completely redecorate some of the cottages at United Methodist Children's Home in Decatur. These cottages house boys and girls ages 17-21 in the Independent Living Program.

World Communion Day at St. Timothy UMC in Stone Mountain

St. Timothy UMC of Stone Mountain hosted a World Communion service filled with a variety of music, including The Sugar Canes, a procession of flags, and an international lunch, featuring food from the 24 nationalities represented by attendees of the church. Many worship attendees dressed up in clothing that portrays their heritage.

North Georgia's own Dr. John Beyers, pastor of Conyers First UMC, had the honor of preaching at Wesley Memorial Methodist Church in Epworth, England. He was in England for the annual meeting of the World Methodist Council.

Children's Home Gets New Playground

The United Methodist Children's Home in Decatur got a new playground thanks to generous donations from fans of the Children's Home and The Home Depot Foundation. The Children's Home came in second place in a Facebook competition put on by The Home Depot, but challenged their Facebook community to help raise the funds to make the playground a reality anyway. Less than a year later that dream has come true and the playground was installed by none other than volunteers from The Home Depot!

START: Lovett Weems at Bethel UMC

Photos from START (Strategic Appointment Roundtable) day at Bethel UMC in Atlanta where Dr. Lovett H. Weems, Jr., was the speaker. Weems is distinguished professor of church leadership and director of the Lewis Center for Church Leadership at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC. LaGrange College brought Weems to North Georgia to do a presentation at the college for clergy and laity the previous day.

Nearly 90 people from across the United States attended Hispanic BASIC Training Bootcamp with church planter Jim Griffith. The event was held November 17-19 at Simpsonwood Conference Center.

The 2009 Retirees House Party included nature walks, line dancing, health screenings, fellowship and fun. Then, the Christmas meal, music, and fellowship helped ring in the season at the annual Retirees Christmas Luncheon.

Bob Farr, author of the book "Renovate or Die: 10 Ways to Focus Your Church on Mission," spent two days with Atlanta-Emory District clergy. He also met with the 2013 START class (Strategic Appointment Roundtable) while he was in North Georgia. Farr serves as Director of the Center for Congregational Excellence in the Missouri Annual Conference.
