‘Behind the Scenes’

I Was Thinking…

I love it when a plan comes together…don’t you? If you have ever said that phrase, then you understand what hard work goes on ‘behind the scenes’ of a plan for it to have a chance at ‘coming together’. This world is full of ‘unsung heroes’ who are the ‘behind the scenes’ servants. We may never know who they are, but they are present…unnoticed and serving.

I think of the people who arrive early to church and turn on the heat in winter or AC in the summer. I think of the folks who wear orange vests to help guests know where to park and they carry umbrellas inviting folks to walk with them in the rain to worship. I see countless people who smile in arriving areas for worship and Christian Education. I see understanding care-givers at the nursery greeting young parents. They are there with an empathetic heart helping parents know their concerns for childcare will be handled with excellence. These ‘behind the scenes’ people are crucial links for spiritual growth in others.

I think of people who have had one-on-one conversations with those who are struggling with an issue in life. The discerning ones who notice in someone when something is not quite right…and they reach out in deep compassion and concern. Most will never know of their care but they, behind the scenes, have cared for another in way that will most likely never be forgotten by the recipient of such care.

I think of folks who just don’t give up when things don’t go their way. I think of their healthy sense of ‘God is not finished with us yet’. Behind the scenes they accentuate the hope when even in their moment of disappointment, their hope is only by faith. Only a few may know their real discouragement, but they are determined to be an ‘encouragement’ to others.

This week…this week of Lent…I felt led to give a ‘shout out’ to all the ‘behind the scenes’ people of the church and of the world. You do make a difference. Thank you! Forgive us when we take you for granted…we often do, and we are sorry. But please remember, “When you help someone out, don’t think about how it looks. Just do it—quietly and unobtrusively. That is the way your God, who conceived you in love, working behind the scenes, helps you out.” (The Message, Matthew 6:3-4)
