'Position is Everything'
I Was Thinking…
Someone once said, “You can never see the sunrise by looking west.” I happen to like that kind of profoundness. How we position ourselves does make a difference. Haven’t we all known people (and maybe at times been the person) who were excellent reservoirs of learning yet never had an idea? As J. Oswald Chambers once wrote, “Eyes that look are common. Eyes that see are rare.”
Our position in life does impact what we experience in life. To resist or receive is a choice we make every day of our lives. Nothing dies quicker than a new idea in a closed mind. It is simply impossible for a person to learn what they think they already know. It was Jesus who responded strongly to some Pharisees because they refused to position themselves to receive. How are we positioning ourselves?
Author John Mason says it well when he writes; “Opportunities can drop in your lap if you have your lap where opportunities drop.” When we don’t position ourselves to receive it’s like praying for a bushel but only carrying a cup. A dear friend, Helen Williams used to say to some of her friends who had been praying for their church to prosper yet as God prospered they were resisting the growth of the church, “Don’t pray for rain if you can’t stand the mud!”
It is true that we typically see things, not as they are, but as we are. If our hearts are in a wrong position, we will see God nowhere. But if our hearts are in the correct position, we will see God everywhere. So how do we position ourselves at the beginning of every day? Do we begin our days, tasks, and lives with thought of God and gratitude? Or is our position on our agenda and ourselves so strong that we would miss God if God walked into the room?
A prayer warrior in my past used to say “Christians on their knees see more than the world on its tiptoes.” That is a truism about position. I am praying for us this week as we work on the position of our lives. I pray that our lives will be positioned in such a way that not only will we see the sunrise in the east but also experience the ‘Sonrise’ in our hearts…each and every day.
