Just Thinking... United and Together

Dana Everhart

6/5/2017

Just Thinking ...   You know by now I believe with all my heart that the Way Forward for us as The United Methodist Church is UNITED and TOGETHER.  My brother in ministry, in the superintendency, and good friend, Sky McCraken, is completing his sixth year as a DS and moving on as I am. He writes a powerful blog. I want to share it here with you. It speaks what my heart has been feeling for so long. I ask you to read it, to consider it, and to pray for our United Methodist Church. Next week, ...

Just Thinking... And Celebrating PKs

There are a lot of graduations photos being shown on Facebook. It is thrilling to see the achievement of these young women and men. There are smiles everywhere and looks of relief on many parents’ faces. I have not had the privilege of sharing with students’ graduation from High School in over six years, because my office is so far removed from their life events.  But today I want to take a moment to offer words of encouragement to those preacher kids who are graduating at this time. I know of ...

Just Thinking... More Changes Ahead

Have you heard the good news?!? Well, it is good and bad news, and I can't ask you which you want first, because I can't hear your response. Since we are people of the Good News, I will start there. Our faithful and loyal Administrative Assistant, Teresa Lilja, has been asked by Bishop Sue and Dr. Richard Winn to become a Full-Time Local Pastor as of this Annual Conference. Teresa has been approved by the Board of Ministry to move from being a Part-Time Local Pastor to the Full-Time status. On ...

Just Thinking... A Problem-free Life?

Dana Everhart

5/8/2017

Sarah Young in her devotional, Jesus Calling. has penned the words, "Do not long for the absence of problems in your life." Well, that is a great platitude, but is it realistic to think that as humans our seeking a problem-free life is wrong? Ms. Young, using the voice of Jesus, states that "this is an unrealistic goal since in this world you will have trouble."  Well, there is no fear of us having a problem-free life, is there? We've got health insurance that may or may not support us in ...

Just Thinking... Another Birthday!

William Shakespeare, Shirley Temple, John Cena, George Lopez, Matthew Underwood, and a host of others share the date of April 23rd with me. Yes, in 1960 in a land far away called Florida, I was born 57 years ago. I stand in a line of pretty famous people. I am older then some and much younger than others.  Fifty-seven years! My children have lovingly announced that I am only 3 years away from 60! Yes, I, too, wonder at times why we don't eat our young! I'm just thinking, but it was only ...

Just Thinking... of Newness and Alleluias

The singer/song writer Maureen McGovern could have been a pastor. She penned the words that every pastor thinks about in her song The Morning After: There's got to be a morning after If we can hold on through the night We have a chance to find the sunshine Let's keep on looking for the light Oh, can't you see the morning after? It's waiting right outside the storm Why don't we cross the bridge together And find a place that's safe and warm? It's not too late, we should be giving Only with ...

Just Thinking... About Moving

Dana Everhart

4/3/2017

I know this morning many of our laity and many of our clergy are awaking to the realization that there are moves afoot for churches and clergy. I also realize that many of the "kitchen cabinets" are wondering what in the world the Bishop and her Cabinet were thinking. I am certain that there is joy and there is sadness in the midst of our district.  I want to reassure all who are reading this column that God Almighty, the Lord of life, and the Holy Spirit have been in the midst of our meetings ...

Just Thinking... Strength and Courage

Just Thinking ...  Strength and Courage "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” - Joshua 1:9 We are a people who believe in the power of scripture and in its place in our daily lives. We preach from the texts of the ancient prophets, and we share the words of the disciples and apostles of Jesus Christ week after week. We offer instruction in Bible Studies and Small Groups on the ...

Just Thinking... Sharing the Story

John 4:5-42. WOW, that is long reading! There is so much in this passage to preach and to teach from that I have trouble knowing where to begin.  The fact that Jesus has no issue being among "those people," you know, the Samaritans,  reminds us that Jesus has no bias or hate toward any of God's children. Every place is His home. John Pinson reminded us in Cabinet last week that the Greek for "well" means a bubbling up spring of life. There is one awesome sermon there. He did a great job ...

Just Thinking...

Just Thinking ...  Wow, I realized that I am one of those people. Well, I know I was one of those as a dad. And okay, I guess as I look back at it, I was one of those as a pastor of a local church. But who knew I could be one of those people as a DS? As a dad, I can tell you about all the crazy bad things about my three children. I can tell you how they make me mad and even furious. Oh, and talking about all their dumb mistakes, oh my goodness! I can do this any time and any where, but ... ...
