“A God-Thing”

Terry Walton

9/19/2017

I Was Thinking… I read this past week that a bride-to-be said “It was a God-thing that Hurricane Irma turned away from our wedding venue leaving little damage and therefore my wedding occurred on schedule.”  That’s what she said a ‘God-thing’.  So what about all those folks that were in the hurricane’s path and suffered greatly?  Was it because God loved her more than them?  Was it because her wedding was more important than their important plans?  Was it because she prayed more fervently ...

Have You Heard the News?

Terry Walton

9/12/2017

I Was Thinking… Have you heard the news?  The world is coming to an end!  That’s right, with all the storms, fires, talk of nuclear holocaust and the UM Church is going to split; the world is coming to an end…any day now…so get ready! I wonder what would have been in the news during the days of the Crusades.  They began in 1095 and ended around 1291.  People killing people…all in the name of Christ…I wonder did anybody post on Facebook that the end of the world was coming soon (maybe not on ...

‘From the Lips of God’

Terry Walton

I Was Thinking… I’ve been reading Eugene Peterson’s book entitled Under the Unpredictable Plant: An Exploration in Vocational Holiness.  I wish I had read it 25 years ago when it was first published.  I think it is a book that every United Methodist Pastor should read.  He writes “Somehow we American Pastors, without really noticing what was happening, got our vocations redefined in the terms of American careerism.  We quit thinking of the parish as a location for pastoral spirituality and ...

Memory Loss

Terry Walton

8/29/2017

I Was Thinking… Do you ever struggle with memory loss?  I know I do.  For example I attended the Atlanta Braves baseball game this past Friday night.  I remembered how to travel to the new SunTrust Park.  I remembered where to park and where our seats were located. In the midst of all this ‘remembering’ there was one thing I had forgotten. My six-year-old grandson, Luke went with me to the game.  It was one of the best nights at a Braves game in quite some time.  The Braves won the game and ...

“How Much Does a Miracle Cost?”

Terry Walton

8/22/2017

I Was Thinking… She made her way six blocks to that small town’s drug store (as they called it).  She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention, but he was busy.  Tess twisted her feet to make a scuffing noise.  No attention.  She cleared her throat with the most disgusting sound she could muster.  No attention.  Finally, she took a quarter from her jelly jar and banged it on the counter.  That did it. “And what do you want?” the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of ...

'Not So Anymore'

Terry Walton

8/15/2017

I Was Thinking… It used to be that the world seemed so big.  Watching the news on television of places around the globe seemed of little concern because those places seemed in another universe.  Not so anymore. Our Korean Church, Immanuel UMC, under the leadership of its Pastor, Daniel Shin, meets every night at 8:00 PM for prayer on behalf of their concern for the Korean Peninsula.  They have family and friends of whom they are deeply concerned.  The heated rhetoric between President Trump ...

Jump Off the Page

Terry Walton

8/8/2017

I Was Thinking… Have you ever had words jump off the page at you?  You were reading a book; an article or even the Bible when all of a sudden there was a word, a phrase, a paragraph that seemed written just for you?  I know I have had this experience on many occasions. It could have to do with context.  If I’m struggling with something…some decision…some person…some issue then subconsciously that ‘need’ is looking for some insight.  And BOOM…words jump off the page.  Or it could be the Holy ...

Hiccups

Terry Walton

8/1/2017

I Was Thinking… A woman went to the doctor’s office where she was seen by one of the younger physicians.  After approximately four minutes in the examination room, she burst forth from the room screaming and running down the hall.  An older physician stopped her and asked what the problem was upon which she told him of her experience with the younger physician.  After listening for several minutes he had her sit with a nurse to relax in another room. It was then the older physician marched ...

Poker Faces

Terry Walton

7/25/2017

I Was Thinking… Have you seen the present day television advertisement for Toyota where the man has what is called a ‘poker face’ but doesn’t have ‘poker arms’?  What an interesting twist…the man can keep his excitement for a great automobile deal in check in terms of facial expressions but his arms go wild with excitement at this great Toyota car deal.  That Toyota commercial has me thinking.  Jesus was recorded in Matthew’s Gospel to have said “You’re here to be light, bringing out the ...

Lifelong Learner

Terry Walton

7/18/2017

I Was Thinking… One of the greatest compliments a person can give another person is “They are lifelong learners”.  One of the worst comments that can be made of someone is “They think they know it all!”  I suspect you have known both along your life’s journey.  When you read this I will be at Pastor’s School with many clergy who find this event a wonderful opportunity to continue the path of being a ‘lifelong learner’.  Other clergy will seek out that timely event with subject matter that ...
