‘Conspiracy of Niceness’

Terry Walton

4/18/2017

I Was Thinking… My younger brother taught me a phrase several years ago as I was complaining about this and that.  He said “Do you want some cheese with that ‘whine’?”  I’ve not forgot it.  There are moments when all of us can lose focus and when we do the path often taken is the path of whining and complaining. In her book ‘The Rule of Benedict: A Spirituality for the 21st Century’ Joan Chittister writes “Complaining and complacency are the two evils that community life most abhors and can ...

'Hard Decisions'

Terry Walton

4/11/2017

I Was Thinking… How difficult it is to make ‘hard decisions’.  After all they are called ‘hard decisions’ for a reason.  They are not ‘easy decisions’.  I suppose most anyone can make ‘easy decisions’.  ‘Easy decisions’ are comfortable and popular.  ‘Hard decisions’, on the other hand, are uncomfortable and for someone or some group unpopular.  But it is in the ‘hard decisions’ that life is often moved to a better and healthier place.  For those who are courageous and healthy enough to make the...

‘A Weekend of Heroes’

Terry Walton

4/4/2017

I Was Thinking… This past weekend was a weekend of ‘heroes’ for me.  Who is your hero?  I have several.  My dad is my hero.  He is 84 on his way to 85 and stays as active as the ‘Ever-Ready Bunny’.  My mom is my hero.  I’ll not tell her age lest I am required to have soap in the mouth (that’s what she did when we say ‘bad words’ as children…There was a period in my childhood when I had the cleanest mouth in town…Ivory soap is the worst).  I’m blessed with many heroes. This past weekend I ...

'Communication'

Terry Walton

3/28/2017

I Was Thinking…   In his book Developing the Leaders Around You leadership guru John Maxwell writes that “Communication is positive interaction.  When communication is one-sided, it can be comical.”  Then he records this experience:   “Why do you want a divorce?” the judge asked.  “On what grounds?” “All over.  We have an acre and a half,” responded the woman. “No, no,” said the judge.  “Do you have a grudge?” “Yes, sir. Fits two cars.” “I need a reason for the divorce,” said the judge ...

‘It’s Our Turn’

Terry Walton

3/14/2017

I Was Thinking… It’s our turn.  Bishop Sue is working her way around the conference setting aside three days for each district.  This Sunday begins our three days with her as the Atlanta-Marietta District.  This will allow her to journey further in discovering who we are and it will offer us an opportunity to continue the process of knowing her.  I wish there were enough time and space for her to preach and be present in all of our churches however this Sunday allows for her to only preach and ...

‘Growing Up’

Terry Walton

3/7/2017

I was Thinking… I am the proud owner of my maternal grandfather’s (Pappy) 1954 pick-up truck.  It is full of memories.  As a young teenager Pappy would allow me to drive the truck when my grandmother and mother were unaware, of course.  It is a “three on the tree” (a three speed on the steering column) that was simply fun to learn to drive.  As I grew older Pappy would allow me to drive it around his 10 acre lake and it created in me a sense of fun and a sense of ‘growing up’. Pappy smoked ‘...

Change First

I Was Thinking… Several years ago Sharon and I had the opportunity to travel to London, England.  My brother was stationed just outside of London while serving in the United States Air Force.  While visiting with he and his family we visited several sights one being Westminster Abbey.  The following words were found inscribed on the tomb of an Anglican Bishop buried there: “When I was young and free and my imagination had no limits, I dreamed of changing the world.  As I grew older and wiser, ...

‘Spectacular’

Terry Walton

2/14/2017

I Was Thinking… So how was your Monday?  Mine was spectacular.  Not to brag but I spent the morning checking off an item on my ‘bucket list’.  Since my first experience in the Holy Land I found myself mesmerized by the Judean Wilderness.  I had always wanted to spend some reflective time there and yesterday was my day.  I hiked 3.5 miles in the Judean Wilderness ending in Jericho.  It was inspiring. I am convinced that I don’t spend enough time in silent reflection.  While today I was hiking ...

Agony of Defeat

Terry Walton

2/7/2017

Agony of Defeat I Was Thinking… Why am I so depressed over a football game?  I remember the theme for ABC’s ‘Wide World of Sports’ years ago… “The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat”.  I’m in agony!  I wanted the Atlanta Falcons to win the Super Bowl.  Why was it so important that the Atlanta Falcons win?  Let me propose a few reflections. It was our turn to win!  The Patriots have had their turn on several occasions.  They are champion hogs!  It was our turn!  The City of Atlanta (my ...

Rise Up!

Terry Walton

1/31/2017

I Was Thinking…   Who’d a thunk it?  That’s a phrase I’ve heard throughout my life.  I know it is not a favorite phrase of the sophisticated and the educated.  It is a phrase for those who are looking for a creative way to convey surprise.  It is a colloquial phrase for ‘who would have thought this could have ever happened?’  It is a phrase that expresses the arrival of something that was against the odds. The Atlanta Falcons… ‘Who’d a thunk it?’  This week is Super Bowl week and the Atlanta ...
