'We Win'

Terry Walton

I Was Thinking… Like you, I’ve been doing my best to focus on the positive in these days of “Sheltering in Place”.  One positive has been to watch some pre-recorded Atlanta Braves Baseball games.  With all sports on hold, the sports channels have been helping us ‘sports junkies’ get our ‘fix’ with great games of the past. One of the joys has been to watch games where we already know the outcome.  This past Sunday I watched the famous game in Brave lore that occurred on October 14, 1992.  It is...

I Was Thinking… Rhythms are important in life.  In Georgia we are people of seasonal rhythms.  Our location on God’s earth allows us to experience all four seasons in distinct and unique ways.  Spring is springing all around us.  The season is changing…the storms remind us of seasonal rhythms. The church has its rhythms.  Advent through Pentecost are the seasons of the Christian year.  It can’t be overstated that this Easter Sunday was unlike any other.  There was a very odd rhythm for all of ...

I Was Thinking… Have you ever been skeptical about something?  The adjective word ‘skeptical’ describes someone who is not easily convinced, having doubt or reservations.  I’m missing Major League Baseball these days.  I love the Atlanta Braves but when it comes to them winning games in the post-season playoffs, I’m skeptical.  Perhaps that is because they have had many chances and just can’t seem to win when it matters.  My hope is colored by my skepticism. Have you known someone who seems to...

I Was Thinking… “In the small fishing village, in the mid thirteenth century, by the Warlegan River, a woman was washing clothes when she saw a helpless calf floating downstream.  She threw down her work and jumped in the water to save the animal.  Happily, the calf was recovered. The next day, two more calves were seen floating down the river.  One was saved, the other lost.  By the end of the week, several cows, many sheep, and a few horses had been rescued.  Many more animals floated by, ...

There are all sorts of ways we can ...

I Was Thinking… Have you been uncertain as to what to think about COVID-19 “Corona Virus”?  I have been in a muddle of emotions.  It is important for my ego that I do not overreact to all the panic around me.  It is important to my life that I not underreact.  How serious do I take this virus that has literally turned our world upside down? We are sailing in uncharted waters…at least that is true for most of us Americans.  We’ve had a few scares but nothing that I can recall seems to compare ...

I Was Thinking… In Christopher Ritter’s book entitled Seven Things John Wesley Expected Us to Do for Kids he writes, “In teaching Methodist preachers the spirit in which they needed to do their work with children, John Wesley recalled the long-suffering instructions of his mother.  He noted how his own father, frustrated in overhearing his wife’s repetitive lessons asked, “How could you have the patience to tell that blockhead the same thing twenty times over?”  Her reply: “If I had told him ...

I Was Thinking… Do any of us enjoy change?  Perhaps you’ve encountered the quote, “The Only thing in life that doesn’t change is that there will be change in life”.  As United Methodist people we know the process of change.  Clergy are appointed one year at a time with hopes that one year will lead to two and two will lead to three and so on.  This time of year is the season of ‘appointment making’ in North Georgia.  Bishop Sue and the Cabinet have met for several weeks praying, discussing, ...

'Who Can Be Trusted?'

Terry Walton

I Was Thinking… There is much in the air these days about trust and it’s lacking in our world.  Who can be trusted?  Politicians?  Sales personnel?  Leaders?  Clergy?  Spouses?  Who can be trusted? It seems we have become a more skeptical society.  We have been burned by those once trusted and now we are simply not certain who to trust.  Politicians seem to only want to grease their own re-elections.  Sales personnel seem to only want to make as much money off us as possible.  Leaders of all ...

I Was Thinking… Yogi Berra, the well-known catcher for the New York Yankees, and Hank Aaron, who at that time played for the Milwaukee Braves were great rivals and friends.  The teams were playing in the World Series, and as usual Yogi was keeping up the chatter, intended to encourage his teammates while distracting the Milwaukee batters. As Aaron came to the plate, Yogi said, “Henry, you’re holding the bat wrong.  You’re supposed to hold it so you can read the trademark.”  Aaron looked at him...
