'Getting Along'

Terry Walton

I Was Thinking… “Why can’t we all just get along with one another?”  I love the way the letter of James in the New Testament puts it, “Real wisdom, God’s wisdom, begins with a holy life and is characterized by getting along with others.  It is gentle and reasonable, overflowing with mercy and blessings, not hot one day and cold the next, not two-faced.  You can develop a healthy, robust community that lives right with God and enjoy its results only if you do the hard work of getting along with ...

'Word of the Year'

Terry Walton

I Was Thinking… Can you say ‘distraction’?  When I think of 2019…I think ‘distraction’.  Merriam-Webster has declared the personal pronoun, ‘they’, as the word of the year for 2019.  There was a 313% increase in lookups on the company’s search site this year compared to 2018 for the word ‘they’. Merriam-Webster may declare ‘they’ as the word of the year, but I declare ‘distraction’ as the posture of the year.  We, and they, have been distracted all year long.  Distraction has taken over the ...

'An Alternate Way'

I Was Thinking… Our Christmas gift to you is a story from one of my mentors and favorite preachers, Dr. Fred Craddock.  I hope you enjoy.   I recall once in Israel, being in Bethlehem and having a Jewish man explain the Christmas story to me.  He explained this to me when we were standing in Shepherd’s Field.  Now, some of you may know what I’m talking about.  There is a field down in the lower part where there were once tents.  Now I think there’s a housing development, but nothing sacred ...

'A Child Leads'

Terry Walton

I Was Thinking… The prophet Isaiah proclaims, “The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them.” (Isaiah 11:6) But what about the children who have difficult childhoods, of no fault of their own.  How do they lead?  These are the ones who spend a lifetime trying to correct the trajectory of ill-equipped adults whose adult illnesses fall unfairly upon the child.  Where will their ...

'AND Witness'

I Was Thinking… Patricia Holbrook in her Saturday’s AJC Commentary entitled “What will they say when you leave?”, spoke words that need repeating. “I have seen it too many times.  Children of churchgoers (and even ministers) rebelling against God because their parents’ talk, and their walk did not match.  How many people cringe at the name of Jesus because they were around self-righteous Christians whose words did not translate into actions?  The apostle Paul said it this way in his letter to ...

'Keeps On Giving'

Terry Walton

I Was Thinking… Perhaps you are shopping for something new and different this Christmas.  I have a suggestion of a gift you can give that keeps on giving.  The San Diego Union-Tribune reported recently that the San Diego Humane Society went to a woman’s van near Del Mar, California.  They found rats had clawed into upholstery, burrowed into the seats and gnawed the engine wiring.  The woman living in the van has agreed to give up her rats—all 300+ of them. Captain Danee Cook says the woman ...

I Was Thinking… “The greatest enemy of thinking is busyness (business?).  I used to love a Zen teacher’s comment that the Western form of laziness is to be busy, while Asian laziness is too much meditation.  But I don’t think that’s true any longer.  Busyness isn’t our way of avoiding things—it’s our total and complete lifestyle.  We have too much to do, too many responsibilities, too many kid’s activities—and in this deluge of tasks and to-dos, we’re highly distracted.  With distracted minds, ...

'Agree to Disagree'

Terry Walton

I Was Thinking… Have you ever won an argument?  According to Dale Carnegie, author of How to Win Friends and Influence People, the answer is no.  “You can’t win an argument”, Carnegie writes.  “You can’t because if you lose it, you lose it; and if you win it, you lose it.  Why?  Well, suppose you triumph over the other person and shoot their argument full of holes and prove that they are non-compos mentis (not sane or in one’s right mind).  Then what?  You will feel fine.  But what about them? ...

'A Better Place

Terry Walton

I Was Thinking… What if we loved everyone in front of us…would the world be a better place? What if we attempted to walk in another’s shoes…would the world be a better place? What if we took time to listen when someone else needed our ear…would the world be a better place? What if we smiled as we crossed each other’s path…would the world be a better place? What if we paused long enough to pray before we made important decisions…would the world be a better place? What if we bent to the ...

I Was Thinking… I cannot get it out of my head.  Kamille McKinney was only 3 years old.  She was fondly known as ‘Cupcake’ to her family and friends.  She went missing and last week her remains were found after a two-week search in a trash bin.  She had attended a birthday party and subsequently abducted and murdered.  Who would do such a thing to a precious 3-year-old little girl?  I cannot get it out of my head. We have two three-year-old grandchildren.  Their names are Brooks and Camryn.  ...
