Director of Children and Family Ministries


Midway United Methodist Church is an authentic community of everyday people intentionally following Jesus in our personal lives and working to be a missional church in our congregational life. We gather regularly to worship God, to read and discuss Jesus’ teachings, to share our joys and struggles, and to welcome newcomers and relieve suffering wherever we can. Director of Children and Family Ministries Scope: This position provides spiritually grounded programmatic oversight to the church’s ministry with children and families from birth through 5th grade. Working with the pastors, lay leaders and volunteers, the director will ensure that structures and policies are in place for a well-rounded and safe program that will help each child grow in faith and become secure in the love of God as they engage in opportunities for learning and service. Supervision is received from the staff person overseeing discipleship. Skills Required: • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent educational experience preferred • Knowledge of child development and different learning styles • A working knowledge of and commitment to basic tenets of Wesleyan theology • Ability to recruit, motivate and supervise volunteers • Ability to recruit, hire and supervise paid nursery staff • Love of God and children. • Organizational and computer skills Duties and Responsibilities: • Serve as the liaison to the Children’s Council • Recruit, train and supervise lay volunteers to lead the children’s ministry • Provide planning and oversight for Sunday school and nursery • Hire and supervise nursery staff and volunteers • Approve and order curriculum for children for Sunday school and VBS that is developmentally appropriate and representative of Wesleyan theology • Plan and implement summer program, including Vacation Bible School and other summer camps and activities • Plan ways to involve children in mission and service • Design community special events that are focused on reaching children and families in the community and the Midway Preschool (e.g. Trunk or Treat) • Provide oversight for special children’s activities around significant Church celebrations such as Christmas and Easter • Work with the Director of Worship Arts to schedule and assist in children singing quarterly in worship (fall, Mother’s Day, Easter, and Christmas) • Provide appropriate care of children who are sick or hospitalized • Be present in one weekly worship service and oversee children’s participation • Work as a team member, maintaining good communication with other staff • Consistently communicate with parents and church through direct email, the Midway UMC Children’s Ministry Facebook page, and by submitting information to the Director of Communications to be publicized • Ensure that all volunteers are Safe Sanctuary trained and that up-to-date records are filed in the office with the Business Manager • Ensure that approved Safe Sanctuary policies are followed for all children and family ministry activities and immediately address any violations • Keep accurate records of children and families involved in the Children’s Ministry, including birthdates, contact information, and allergies and that this information is entered into the church database (ACS). • Participate in appropriate continuing education activities for spiritual and professional growth • Other duties as assigned We believe the best organizations are diverse and inclusive, and we are on a journey to create an environment where all employees and congregation members can work together to support the church’s goals.
