Director of Operations


First United Methodist Church of Marietta (MFUMC) is seeking an experienced candidate to oversee the day-to-day operations of this large, traditional church outside Atlanta. MFUMC is committed to growing in the Christian faith and serving in love, both in our community and around the world. This position provides for the framework, facility, and financing through which to do God's work. Primary Responsibilities: Financial and Legal: • Prepare the annual budget with support and input from staff and the Finance Committee. • Manage the cash flow position of the church including oversight of the banking, investment, and loan/line of credit positions as approved and directed by the Treasurer and Finance Committee. • Oversee all accounting functions including accounts payable, posting of contributions, payroll, and audits. • Direct and lead the financial staff and Finance Committee volunteers, as needed. • Utilize church financial software (multiple programs) to prepare all financial reports for the staff and Finance Committee and all quarterly and annual contribution statements to donors. • Advise other staff on financial matters and compliance with budget and policies. • Develop and maintain adequate financial controls. • Attend regularly scheduled meetings of the Finance Committee, providing key information and reports. • Provide accounting support and reporting for capital campaigns and fundraising. • Support the Stewardship Chair in promotion and tracking of member pledges and operating budget performance and, upon request, attend regularly scheduled meetings of the Stewardship Committee. • Act as staff liaison to the Scholarship Committee, preparing all documents to facilitate student grants. • Support the Endowment Foundation by making bank deposits, providing input and acknowledging gifts, and attending the regularly scheduled Endowment Foundation Committee meetings. Personnel: • Administer the salary budget for clergy and lay staff including payment of wages and housing and appropriate deductions for taxing authorities as approved by the Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC). • Manage the employee benefits programs including medical, dental, disability, COBRA, paid time off (PTO), life insurance and the 403(b) savings plan for the lay staff and act as liaison with North Georgia Conference for clergy benefit administration. • Perform all pre-employment screening of applicants including background checks and I-9 documents. • Maintain personnel files for all staff. • Provide input to Senior Minister and SPRC on issues of compliance. • Recommend changes and requisite updates to the Employee Handbook and implement changes with lay staff upon approval by SPRC. • Coordinate annual performance reviews working collaboratively with the Director of Program. • Implement salary adjustments and/or bonuses as approved by SPRC and authorized by Finance Committee. • Coordinate training programs for lay staff including CPR, first aid, and safety/emergency procedures. Facilities and Food Service: • Supervise the Facilities Manager, Food Service Supervisor, and all maintenance, housekeeping, and kitchen staff to oversee the equipment, operation, cleanliness, safety, security, and upkeep of all church facilities, grounds, and vehicles. • Oversee the church calendar and scheduling of all events to provide appropriate space and setups for meetings of the congregation and the non-profit community, including the appropriate collection of fees. • Ensure compliance with licensing, fire and safety codes, and food service regulations. • Recommend updates to Facilities Usage Guidelines and ensure compliance with policies of the Board of Trustees. • Evaluate the property insurance needs of the church making recommendations to the Board of Trustees. • Attend regularly scheduled meetings of the Board of Trustees. General Administration and Legal: • Coordinate the work of administrative assistants and the receptionist in support of the various ministries and programs. • Ensure compliance with all applicable governmental regulations and requirements. • Responsible for IT, copiers and telephone systems. • Assess staff office space and equipment, recommending changes and improvements. • Negotiate contracts with vendors and service providers. • Work with legal counsel when required or requested, especially as relates to employee matters. • Serve as Chair of a special committee (Transition Team) charged with overseeing church and staff to establish and direct best practices, procedures, and protocols for dealing with ongoing pandemic and health issues. • Serve on Church Council, attending regularly scheduled meetings and Annual Charge Conference. • Assist the Senior Minister, Program Staff, and committee members as needed.
