JOB DESCRIPTION FOR JCUMC DIRECTOR OF MUSIC & WORSHIP Position Summary The Director of Music & Worship manages an essential, highly visible area of the Johns Creek United Methodist Church. This role involves leadership and continual growth, through best practices, for a thriving program that embodies and reflects the church’s heart and soul. The largest responsibilities fall into two main categories: 1. Collaborate with the Senior Pastor and other clergy in planning worship that utilizes a passion for making each week’s Modern Worship and Traditional Worship services timely, vital, meaningful, and fluent, within the context of the congregation’s culture and the Methodist doctrine. Work with clergy in coordinating the details of our modern service, along with funerals, baptisms, and any other worship elements and events. Oversee and supervise the work of the Worship Media Team. 2. Maintain (and in some areas build out), a high-level, multi-component program of sacred and secular choral and instrumental music comprised of three distinct choirs, an organist, an orchestra, the orchestra’s subsets (woodwinds, strings, etc.), a praise worship band, and a handbell ensemble. The Director of Music & Worship will have an (existing) direct report managing the Adult Chancel Choir, but will be individually responsible for energizing and building on the in-place foundations for the Youth and Children’s choirs, making them bigger and more significant than they were pre-Covid. Reports to: Head Pastor Coordinates closely with: Clergy & Pastoral team Interfaces weekly with: Directors and Staff in the Finance, Administration, Marketing & Communications areas; and numerous volunteers Direct reports/Oversight: P/T Administrative Assistant. There are a number of part time staff providing daily management or support, as Assistant Directors or Leaders in the music areas (organ, orchestra, praise worship band, handbells, choirs). There is a P/T Worship Media team and a P/T Venue Host. In addition, there are paid Orchestral and Choral Scholars. Experience & Qualifications The preferred candidate will possess a combination of academic knowledge and hands-on expertise in the fields of Sacred Music, Choral Vocal Technique, Original Composition & Conducting for Orchestra or Chamber Music, Worship Planning, and/or any aligned areas of focus or specialties. A high degree of choral aptitude and musicianship is necessary. A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field is required, with a Master’s strongly preferred. A further advanced degree is in keeping with the history of this position, and considered a significant addition to a candidate’s CV. A minimum of five years of related employment experience is needed, with additional experience preferred. Skills The position is best suited to someone accustomed to being continually “in the mix” with the daily life of a church. Interpersonal skills, as a ministry leader and as a team member; the ability to propose innovative ideas while coordinating closely with other stakeholders; an established comfort level with directing independently when needed; established capability enabling others to succeed in direct report or volunteer support roles. The job enjoys long-term, more “visionary” planning, with goals and metrics for growing and changing programs, or maintaining existing excellence. Equally important is shorter-term execution for activities such as weekly rehearsals, budgeting, staff/volunteer coordination for Worship service components, regular communication with music ministry participants (singers, musicians), meetings, and more.
