Director of Music


Athens First United Methodist Church, with a rich history of musical excellence, seeks a dynamic leader to strengthen and energize our program through high-quality music. The church maintains an extensive inventory of instruments, including a recently-installed Quimby organ, Opus 77 (2020), while the music program consists of the Sanctuary Choir (40-50 adult singers, along with 8 Staff Singers from the University of Georgia School Of Music), Chamber Ensemble, the Alleluia and Carillon Ringers (adult handbell choir), Wesleyan Youth Choir, and Children’s choirs. In addition to weekly services, the Sanctuary Choir, along with an Orchestra/Brass Ensemble, presents two seasonal performances a year for the congregation and community: a Christmas cantata and an Easter major-work performance. Summary: Reporting to the Senior Minister, the primary duty of the Director of Music is to maintain and build upon a program of sacred liturgical music that inspires the congregation in worship. The Director of Music conducts the Sanctuary Choir, Chamber Ensemble, and the Alleluia and Carillon Ringers. This position leads the music program with assistance from the Assistant Director of Music/Organist and a Director of Children and Youth Music. Qualifications: Education/Experience Candidates must possess a master’s degree in a related field (i.e. music, choral conducting, etc.) with experience leading a comprehensive church music program; or, a commensurate combination of education and experience. Knowledge/Skills/Attributes The successful candidate should possess the following knowledge, skills, and attributes: • Ability to direct and oversee a comprehensive music ministry, including choir conducting • Strong verbal, written, and presentation communication skills • Ability to work well with and relate to others, including supervising staff • Confidentiality, integrity, and honesty • Ability to coordinate and implement multiple concurrent tasks while meeting deadlines • Maintain a positive and helpful attitude, even during difficult times • Engage in conduct consistent with and supportive of the mission of the church • Membership in a United Methodist Church is preferred Responsibilities: Choral Direction, Rehearsing, and Service Playing 1. Direct all aspects of recruiting, rehearsing, and conducting the Sanctuary Choir 2. Participate in weekly worship services and all holiday-related worship services 3. Recruit, rehearse, and conduct orchestra for any special musical presentations 4. Select hymns, choral repertoire, and organ repertoire according to the liturgical calendar in consultation with the Senior Minister 5. Recruit, rehearse, and conduct the Chamber Ensemble and the Alleluia and Carillon Ringers Communication and Personnel 1. Recruit, supervise, direct, and support the work of the Assistant Director of Music/Organist, Director of Children and Youth Music, and all paid staff singers 2. Attend and participate in regular church staff meetings 3. Meet regularly with the Senior Pastor to discuss the design and execution of liturgies 4. Consult with families regarding wedding and funeral liturgies as requested, specifically for music selections 5. Serve as a liaison for the musical and liturgical education of the congregation Administration, Publication, and Planning 1. Plan hymns, choral repertoire, and organ repertoire to fit with the sermons and the Church Liturgical Year 2. Prepare the Order of Worship weekly for publication and work with the communications staff to facilitate a quality visual representation 3. Prepare bulletins for holiday services, including but not limited to, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and any other special worship observances 4. Oversee the music budget, and prioritize funding to meet the needs of the music program 5. Prepare and communicate rehearsal schedules for all ensembles in a timely manner Preparatory Work 1. Diligently study and prepare all scores for choral rehearsals and worship services 2. Model a commitment to planning and preparation to help all those involved in the music program to embrace preparation as a key to the successful execution of worship music 3. Notify the appropriate Church personnel if there are any technical or facility issues requiring attention before a worship service or other performances Maintenance and Resources 1. Oversee upkeep, maintenance, and tuning of all instruments, including the Quimby organ, Opus 77 (2020); three Yamaha Baby Grand pianos; one Pramberger Baby Grand piano; Schulmerich Carillon Handbells; and, various other instruments throughout the church 2. Supervise the organization and inventory of the music library 3. Provide physical and electronic copies of materials for all choir and ensemble members 4.
