JOB DESCRIPTION Director of Children’s Ministry New Hope United Methodist Church, Gainesville, GA PURPOSE: The Director of Children’s Ministry will provide relevant and intentional programming for our ministry with children, youth and their families. The Children’s Christian Education program provides an environment for children to be nurtured in the faith and grow in the faith; to create experiences that support children in the knowledge and awareness of God; to provide opportunities that support children in discovering, developing, and sharing their unique gifts from God; and to model God’s unconditional love for all God’s children. An understanding of, and respect for the Christian faith and inclusive values of our church community are of critical importance, as is team work. VALUES: The ministries of New Hope are informed and guided by 5-Areas 1) Spiritual Growth, (2) Hospitality and Welcome, (3) Diversity and Multiculturalism, (4) Mission and Outreach, and (5) Lay Leadership Development ACCOUNTABILITY: The Director of Children’s Ministry works under the overall supervision of the Pastor, and is ultimately accountable to the Staff Parish Relations Committee. The Director is also to work collaboratively with all other staff. RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary responsibility of the Director of Children’s Ministry is to provide multiple opportunities and a safe environment for children to participate in the life of the congregation where they are informed, formed and transformed as disciples of Jesus Christ. This will be accomplished through the following program areas: Sunday School, Children’s Church and Mid-Week Programs: Provide oversight and Leadership for the Sunday School program, Children’s Church, and Mid-week Program in order to: 1. Provide a safe and secure environment, in compliance with safe sanctuary policies. 2. Meet with parents, as needed, for planning and evaluating the Sunday School, Children’s Church, and Mid-Week programs. 3. Connect, equip, train, support, and sustain volunteers for Children’s Ministry. 4. Be present and prepared to greet, support and encourage children, parents and teachers each Sunday morning and Wednesday Night before and after scheduled programing. 5. Recruit, supervise and manage Adult Volunteers in the performance of their duties, and equip and support volunteers in using curriculum and other resources. 6. Supervise and support Child Care Providers and Volunteers. 7. Organize, maintain, and purchase Sunday School, Children’s Church, and Mid-Week supplies and curriculum. 8. Collect medical forms, family information, and maintain attendance records. Vacation Bible School (VBS) Program: Provide oversight for program in order to: 1. Plan, coordinate and supervise the annual VBS program. 2. Identify and acquire curriculum, supplies, and other resources for VBS. 3. Recruit, train and equip a volunteer team for VBS. 4. Advertise and publicize VBS in the church and community, including inviting and connecting with the surrounding neighborhoods. 5. Invite and develop supportive relationships with our New Hope Preschool Community. Family Ministries Provide support and shared leadership role with the pastor and other program staff in order to: 1. Support parents and families in their formative roles with children. 2. Connect with and invite new families into children’s programs. Other Programs and Activities Provide support and shared leadership in order to: 1. Plan and coordinate seasonal programs and activities, such as Advent, Christmas Eve, Lent, Easter Egg Hunt, and Fall Festival. 2. Plan and lead children in multi-generational worship, fellowship, and mission activities. 3. Support lay leadership, volunteers, and other staff, Administration and Support 1. Submit information for each monthly newsletter with information about programs and ministry with children. 2. Meet with parents and volunteers regularly. 3. Attend monthly Church Council meetings, and staff meetings as scheduled. 4. The Director of Children’s Ministry is to be a visible presence in the overall life of the church and should be present on all Sunday mornings each month, even on Sundays when Children’s Church is not taking place. On Sundays when there is no Children’s Church, the Director should use this opportunity to connect with new families and recruit new volunteers. 5. Participate in regular continuing education opportunities to keep up with developments in children and youth ministry. 6. The Director of Children’s Ministry will work with the Pastor and the Program Staff in creating a vital and holistic team ministry. QUALIFICATIONS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required to perform successfully in this position. 1. A degree in Christian Education or related experience. 2. Demonstrated commitment to the Christian faith; and experience working in a church setting in Christian Education or children’s ministry. 3. Understanding of the spiritual and developmental life-stages from birth to adulthood and related spiritual needs. 4. Experience with and demonstrated ability to work with children and families. 5. Experience with inviting, connecting, equipping, and sustaining volunteers. 6. Experience with working with volunteers, parents and staff in a collaborative and professional manner; 7. Demonstrated leadership, organizational, and planning skills and the ability to take initiative. 8. Ability to work independently without direct supervision on a regular basis. 9. Ability to stay up-to-date on applicable training, i.e. CPR, First Aid, and Safe Sanctuary policies. OTHER TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 1. The Director of Children’s Ministry is a Part-Time position (10 – 15 hours/week). 2. Sunday Mornings and Wednesday Nights are the primary hours for this role. Wednesday hours are replaced during the summer by VBS and Special Events. 3. The Director of Children’s Ministry will be granted 4 Paid Sundays off each year. (One per Quarter). 4. The Director of Children’s Ministry is expected to schedule coverage and provide lesson plans when away. 5. Compensation package will be determined by the SPRC on an annual basis. 6. Performance reviews will be held annual with check ins on an as needed basis.
