Full-Time Director of Communications - Decatur First UMC

The Director of Communications partners with the senior staff leadership team to form and execute strategies to effectively communicate the vision of Decatur First UMC within the church and to the community. The ideal Director of Communications candidate will be a well-rounded communications professional with experience in nonprofit or ministry communications. Candidate would have experience in print and digital media asset creation, basic video editing, web design, social media management, and promotions. Qualifications

  1. Commitment and devotion to the mission of the United Methodist Church
  2. 3-5 years of experience in professional communications with proficiency in graphic creation and video production
  3. Proficient in programs such as InDesign, Premiere, Canva, or others as applicable
  4. Bachelor’s Degree in marketing, communications, or equivalent work experience in related field
Skills Required
  1. Passionate about shaping and sharing the story of Decatur First UMC
  2. Skilled in print media design, specifically church bulletins, informational flyers and newsletters
  3. Accomplished in social media management including Facebook Page management, Facebook Group Community management, Instagram engagement
  4. Ability to write creatively and concisely in a consistent voice across all Decatur First UMC platforms
  5. Strong relational abilities and problem-solving skills
  6. Strong storytelling ability across multiple mediums
  7. Ability to coach clergy and staff leadership on brand consistency
  8. Takes initiative to promote the voice of Decatur First in the community
  9. Experience in media relations
  10. Excels at collaborating effectively and professionally with other church leaders and volunteers
  11. Must be able to communicate intergenerationally
Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Develop and execute strategic communication plans for church services, events, news and ministries to internal and external audiences
  2. Ensure all church communication is consistent with the vision, mission, and values of DFUMC
  3. Plan and execute special Sunday morning initiatives to engage congregation and community members
  4. Must be available to work on Sundays
  5. Oversee all marketing communications including branding, public relations, social media, and digital content
  6. Collaborate with clergy and worship team to explore elements of services that can enhance the sermon and create a meaningful impact (e.g. announcements, ministry highlights, and special elements in services)
  7. Work with the tech crew to ensure graphic and creative elements are ready for worship and events
  8. Production of graphic design projects and print materials such as a weekly church bulletin, bulletin inserts, web graphics, worship graphics, church brochures, ministry info cards, event flyers, and other collateral
  9. Develop and manage annual communications budget
  10. Manage and maintain the church website, hosted on Squarespace platform
  11. Manage church social media platforms including the Facebook Page, Facebook Group, and Instagram account
  12. Develop all written communication either in print or electronic form
  13. Provide support and help to other staff as needed
