Devotion: Salvation is Free, but Discipleship is Costly                                                                    Scripture: Luke 13:22-31 (NRSV)
At the beginning of His ministry, thousands of disciples chased after Jesus as they would a celebrity—but after His death, that number had dwindled to only a few hundred (Acts 1:15; 1 Corinthians 15:6).  These disciples quickly learned that being a Christian was no walk in the park. Following in the footsteps of our Savior means more than just giving your heart to the Lord—it often means making difficult choices and doing difficult things. In response to someone who asked Jesus, “Lord, will only a few be saved?” He warned, “Work hard to enter the narrow door to God’s kingdom, for many will try to enter but will fail”. In other words, Jesus is saying it’s not about quantity of access but the quality of who gains entry.

While salvation is a gift of God, it is clear that God expects us to cherish it and demonstrate discipline and determination in pursuing entrance through the narrow door. As I meditated on this passage, the Lord spoke to my heart saying, “On the broad path there is room for all kinds of fleshly attitudes like bitterness and unforgiveness, resentment and vindictiveness. But through the narrow door there is only room for the Spirit”, and “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5: 22-23).

If you are like me, this pandemic has been a wake-up call. Bible verses that used to sound pleasant and encouraging are now life preserving. Scriptures like Luke 13 have a more urgent ring. Let us heed the words of Jesus, stay on the narrow path, leave your excess baggage behind, and experience the joy of discipleship.

This is the day to follow Jesus as His disciple, and like Jesus, “always pressing toward Jerusalem” (Luke 13:22).

Prayer: Father, thank you for showing us that you are the way in which we are to walk. Help me to stay on the discipleship path today, obeying Your Word, keeping the right attitude, and doing and speaking what I know is right. You see everything, and I know my reward to enter through the narrow door will come from You and through You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

To God be the glory!
