The new community garden at Young Harris Memorial UMC made the front page the Athens Banner Herald on Easter Sunday. The garden, which was funded in part by a Peace with Justice grant from the North Georgia Conference, will provide fresh vegetables for Action Ministries' Our Daily Bread soup kitchen in Athens.
Action Ministries had previously planted a garden on their location at Oconee Street UMC to grow vegetables for Our Daily Bread and integrate into the meals. Work on the garden stopped after a fire took down the church’s sanctuary building where the meals were served. Fearing the garden might be discontinued, Executive Director Erin Barger mentioned the need for a community partner to save the garden project to Action Ministries board member and Athens District Superintendent Gary Whetstone. He connected her with the incoming pastor for Young Harris, Rev. David Wofford. Wofford and the Young Harris congregation took on the gardening challenge enthusiastically.
