Harlem UMC Visits Catawba Indian Reservation with Native American Ministries
Last week Harlem UMC in the Augusta District traveled to the Catawba Indian Reservation close to Rock Hill, S.C.  It was their first children's mission trip and they had seven children, one as young as five, go to use their hands and feet to serve Christ by serving others. They worked hard removing weeds, stacking rocks, picking up trash along nature trails, and learned about the Catawba Indians' culture through stories and songs. The children presented a gift of six large bags of blueberries that they hand-picked in Harlem, Georgia. They received a gift of a book entitled, "Those Who Remain" by Gene J. Crediford, which tells of the history of the Native Americans in South Carolina. They also received heritage seeds of okra, red cranberry beans, shielded-figure beans, and ground cherries. These are seeds that are dried and have been continuously planted every season from previous year since about 900 AD. A gift of pottery by Medicine Woman Becki Garris was given to CONAM Chairperson Mike Shearon who exchanged a tee-shirt promoting Native American Ministries. I will have my children's ministry director send you a more detailed story and some pictures. It took almost two years to make this trip happen since nobody can enter the reservation without an invitation. They have been asked to return in September for a big gathering (about 500 Native Americans).
