Elaine Crawford Publishes Advent Devotional

North Georgia pastor Rev. Dr. Elaine Crawford has written new Advent devotional based on lectionary scriptures. It includes a  leader guide with information about the season of Advent, suggestions for starting and leading small groups, Bible background, and discussion activities so that it can easily be used as a small group study.

The devotional, titled The Lord Is Our Light, invites readers to explore God’s hope and presence through a study of key Bible readings calling us to praise God as we actively wait for the coming of God’s redemption and new creation. The study includes commentary and reflection on readings from the Old Testament, the Gospels, and the Epistles. The goal is to help participants understand, appreciate, and engage in meaningful and joyous celebrations of Advent and Christmas and to live each day in God's light through Jesus Christ.

"I  have wanted to write for Abingdon Press for some time," said Crawford. "I was approached by one of their editors and asked if I would be interested in writing an Advent devotional. Of course I jumped at the chance."

She has previously published several devotional commentaries that were included in the Women of Color Study Bible. Crawford's first book, "Hope in the Holler: A Womanist Theology of Hope," was published in 2002 by Westminster John Knox. Her PhD is in Historical theology, with a Womanist emphasis, so this book is still in use in Theology courses and used in Seminaries.

"I pray the Advent devotional will bless the heart, mind, and spirit of each person as they reads it," Crawford said.
Crawford is pastor of Newnan Chapel UMC in the LaGrange District and is the Religion and Race representative for the Connectional Ministries board. Email her at elaine.crawford@ngumc.net.
