Bishop B. Michael Watson has just announced two changes to the North Georgia Cabinet.
The Rev. Tommy Willingham will be appointed as the Director of New Church Development. Willingham currently serves as senior pastor of Sugarloaf UMC.
"It is truly a privilege for me to have this opportunity in this season of my life and ministry to serve with the bishop, cabinet, pastors and laity of the North Georgia Conference to plant new United Methodist congregations," said Willingham.
Willingham will work out of the office at the United Methodist Center at Simpsonwood. The Rev. Parks Davis, who now serves as Director of New Church Development, will retire in June.
"I appreciate and covet the prayers of the members of our conference and existing churches as we seek to carry out the great commission to go and make disciples of Jesus Christ," said Willingham.
Rev. Gary Whetstone will be appointed as the new Superintendent of the Athens Elberton District. He currently serves as senior pastor of Mountain Park UMC in Stone Mountain.
"Having spent nine years in the Athens-Elberton District, I know of its strength and good work," said Whetstone. "It excites me to think of returning to it and many of my friends."
He and his wife Diane will move to Athens in June.
"Diane, and I acknowledge the honor of it all," he said of the appointment, "and are praying that, through God's grace, we will worthily occupy the place of the Athens-Elberton District parsonage family."
