A Once in a Lifetime Invitation: Singing at the National Prayer Breakfast

2/25/2010

Since 1980 my vocal-music ministry has carried me across 43 states and five continents. But the 2010 National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. will be one of my most memorable experiences.

On Feb. 3, I boarded a flight in Atlanta bound for Reagan International Airport to meet with Senator Johnny Isakson, who had invited me to sing the closing song following a speech by President Barack Obama.  To say the least, I was extremely excited about this opportunity.  First, because it was a high honor, second, I had the privilege of choosing the song and third, I would be seated at the head table. The fact that God had opened a door for me to share with a group of this nature was almost beyond my comprehension.

After being met by members of Senator Isakson’s staff at the airport, I was transported to his office and on to the Senate Dining Room, where we had lunch. This was followed by a tour of the Capitol, led by Senator Isakson and staff.  I was also honored to meet Mary Kay Messenger, who joined me in a spontaneous rendition of “God Bless America” while passing through the Capitol Rotunda.  It was an unforgettable experience, especially when other visitors paused, as if to reverently honor the blessing of our nation.

On Thursday morning, Feb. 4, the ballroom of the Washington Hilton was filled with 3,200 people, including 600 international guests -  among them, 170 heads of state. Before the program commenced, it was my privilege to meet many of our national leaders, including Rear Admiral Barry Black, Chaplain, U.S. Senate; Rep. W. Todd Akin (Missouri); Rep. Charlie Wilson (Ohio); Senator Orrin Hatch (Utah); Admiral Michael Mullen, Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff; Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton; Vice President Joseph Biden and President Obama, along with First Lady Michelle Obama.  The entire morning was outstanding!

I will always remember having the privilege of sharing the gospel in five minutes to 3,200 people from many nations, in one room, with one song, “We Believe,” a message that declares that we believe in the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and that the world and everything within it belongs to God.

Praise the Lord!
