Pilot Program for vital leaders launches as the Strategic Appointment Roundtable

Vital congregations need vital clergy leaders. The Strategic Appointment Roundtable seeks to combine excellent training, intentional community and accountable coaching to strengthen both lay and clergy leaders.
A group of fruitful pastors gathered with a team from Connectional Ministries to design a series of events to strengthen our existing churches. From this brainstorming, the Strategic Appointment Roundtable was born.
Targeted clergy, who are new to ministry or new to their appointment, were invited to engage in this two-year process to develop their skills. Pastors will meet on a monthly basis for content and conversation. Senior pastors have been invited to create a lay team that will participate in parallel training.
After an introductory meeting in August, 60 clergy from across our conference chose to begin this START journey together.  In October, Bruce Elder from ghSmart and board member at Murphy-Harpst led training at Dunwoody on Personnel for Preachers: The Who of Hiring.
One pastor said “I'm recommending these events to other colleagues. They are clearly "value-added" ways to spend time.  The session was intentional, productive, beneficial and practical!”
Another said, “I'm using some of the information this week to conduct annual reviews with staff by asking "Are your goals measurable?"
In November, pastors and their music directors, worship chairs or worship leaders joined Marcia McFee, General Conference Worship Leader, for two days of worship design at Camp Glisson.
One of the START pastors remarked “What an inspiration to us! My music director and I came away with some great ideas and conversation topics for working toward starting a contemporary service as well as some ways that we can make traditional worship simply sparkle without losing the traditional feel. I hope that our sharing together around the tables has been as inspiring to others as it has to me.”
In January, we will gather again at Camp Glisson for three days of Planning for Preaching and Ministry with leadership like Bill Britt from Peachtree Road UMC.
In February, participants can choose between a visit to teaching churches across our conference to learn from leaders who have a track record for excellence and a visit with one of our District Superintendents.  Please pray for these leaders as we grow together in ministry.
