Fire Destroys Oconee St UMC in Athens, Home to Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen

Oconee Street UMC in Athens sustained major damage in a late-night fire. The church is home to Our Daily Bread soup kitchen which feeds breakfast and lunch to homeless in Athens seven days a week. There were no injuries and the building was not occupied at the time. Rev. Lisa Caine is pastor.

"Please be in prayer for the church members, Our Daily Bread guests and Action Ministries leaders and volunteers," said Athens District Superintendent Gary Whetstone.

The Athens Banner-Herald reports that officials do not suspect foul play.

Rev. Caine and church leaders are working on a location and schedule for Sunday worship. Our Daily Bread served breakfast on the front lawn Tuesday morning - donated graciously by Chik-fil-A.
