How many people have visited a church and received a small gift? Many have been given coffee mugs, magnets, candy, bumper stickers and other trinkets, but what about a CD? Many of the Sixes visitors have long commutes to and from work so Lead Pastor, Dr. Joe McKechnie, created a CD to make the “drive time” a little better.

McKechnie was not immediately called to ordained ministry. Before becoming a preacher, he was a television sportscaster and even interned with the Georgia Bulldog’s well-known radio broadcaster, Larry Munson, while attending the University of Georgia. In his career as a pastor, he has found ways to put his Broadcast Journalism degree to good use, this time for the benefit of Sixes UMC.

McKechnie explains, “with my background in broadcasting, news writing, and editing, I felt that I could use my skills to create a CD that we could distribute to people in our community.”

The pastor collaborated with a new member of their church who is an on-air personality for a major Atlanta radio station. Their finished product was Drive Time. With the help of the station’s production facilities, McKechnie uses 11 minutes to provide listeners with music and information about the church.

Drive Time is handed out to all of Sixes UMC’s visitors. It is also sent out to new families moving into the community. Many members commit to helping in this church outreach strategy by handing them out to friends and acquaintances that are not regular church-goers.
