Last month the Atlanta-College Park and Atlanta-Emory District Offices moved to a new shared office suite in Atlanta. Longtime staff member Mozelle Mitchell will serve both districts as Administrative Assistant.
"Our sharing of space has evolved from a desire to enhance administrative and possibly programmatic ministries," said Atlanta-College Park District Superintendent Rev. Dr. Bernice Kirkland. "The Woodruff Building, owned by Georgia State University and just across the street from the campus, is leased to non-profits. It is an ideal space, not only for district responsibilities but for a United Methodist presence in the heart of Atlanta."
The opportunity to move to the Woodruff Building coincided with the end of the lease for the Atlanta-Emory District Office space. Both Superintendents serve congregations from Peachtree Street to the far ends of North and South Atlanta.
"It's nice to have a seasoned District Superintendent paired with a rookie DS," said Atlanta-Emory District Superintendent Rev. Mike Long. Kirkland is dean of the cabinet and Long stepped into the role this June.
Long also emphasized the benefit to the district working with Mitchell. "We couldn't have a better person than Mozelle to help us merge. She is invaluable," he said.
Beyond cost savings from shared space, laypersons from both districts will have the opportunity to intersect, superintendents may combine ministry events and training, and district Connectional Ministries may merge visions and ministries in ways that save time and energy while enhancing practices.
"The fruitfulness of merging these two offices are endless," said Kirkland. "The journey has begun."
