Guide for Ash Wednesday 2021

Ash Wednesday (which falls on February 17 this year) begins the 40-day season of Lent. As your congregation considers safe ways to celebrate Ash Wednesday amid the Coronavirus pandemic, we offer two helpful resources.

1 - Yet Even Now
Discipleship Ministries offers considerations for your preparations for Ash Wednesday 2021. The suggestions begin with possible scenarios and practical ideas for imposing ashes safely. We encourage you to take this information and work with your own worship team to contextualize it for your community of faith.

2 - Guidance to Help
As congregations consider safe ways to celebrate Ash Wednesday amid the coronavirus pandemic, a team from Candler School of Theology has developed guidance to help

The ecumenical team was convened by three United Methodists (two of them from Candler). They produced a three-page guide to reduce health risks as Christians mark the start of Lent. The guide draws on a range of experts, including the Centers for Disease Control.

The guide is based on fulfilling the core purposes of Ash Wednesday, which include:

  • To call the congregation to personal and corporate repentance
  • To face our mortality
  • To call baptized Christians to take up spiritual disciples to reaffirm our baptismal commitments
