Laity E-Newsletter Launching this Month
'I believe in our church and in its mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The steady accomplishment of this mission should be our central and singular focus and I believe that laity play a central role in its fulfillment.' —Nate Abrams, Lay Leader
This week the North Georgia Conference Board of Laity will launch a monthly e-newsletter. All laity (and clergy!) are invited to subscribe
In each edition, expect a reflection from the Conference Lay Leader or an Associate Conference Lay Leader, and highlights of helpful information. Read this month's welcome from Nate Abrams:
Greetings North Georgia Laity!
I greet you in the name of our Savior Jesus Christ. My name is Nate Abrams and I am grateful and humbled to have been elected your Conference Lay Leader at Annual Conference in June. I must begin by sharing my deep appreciation for Bill Martin, our immediate past Conference Lay Leader, for the work and wisdom he brought to the position over the last quadrennium. Bill led us through these last few years with incredible grace. We are a better Annual Conference for his leadership.
In an effort to communicate better with the laity of the North Georgia Conference we are trying something new by publishing this monthly newsletter. Its contents will vary, but generally, it will contain a brief reflection or devotion written by me or one of our fantastic Associate Annual Conference Lay Leaders or District Lay Leaders. It will also include Conference and District News that is especially pertinent to the laity. We want you to be informed of what’s going on in the largest Annual Conference in United Methodism.
This month, I will offer a brief intro to let you know who I am. I was born in Thomasville, Georgia, and raised in the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME). I have been some flavor of Methodist my entire life. I joined the UMC in 2003 because my fiancé, now wife, was a United Methodist. My wife is an ordained elder, serving Bethany UMC - Smyrna, which is where I currently hold my membership. We are the proud parents of two sons who keep us on our toes! I am an aerospace engineer in my day job. I enjoy reading, listening to and making music, playing in the kitchen (cooking), and vegetable gardening.
I believe in our church and in its mission - to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. The steady accomplishment of this mission should be our central and singular focus and I believe that laity play a central role in its fulfillment. If we are to call ourselves Christians and United Methodists then all that we do, in church and in our daily lives, should be oriented around spreading the awareness of God's grace, the reality of God's love, and the power of Jesus' salvation.
I look forward to meeting many of you and hearing your ideas about how we, the people called Methodist in North Georgia, can be in mission and ministry with one another. We have a tremendous call, and thus a tremendous opportunity, to make disciples of Jesus Christ. Let us never grow weary in the work of the Gospel, for God is with us.
Peace and Grace,
Nathaniel (Nate) Abrams
