Meet the Children's Ministry Team: Kim, DeDe, and Mimi

The North Georgia Conference Center for Congregational Excellence exists to support, resource, and equip local church leaders in making disciples of Jesus Christ and witnessing to transformation, beginning in your local community. With over 800 expressions of church currently active in our Conference, this team must adapt staff, resources, and strategies to meet the changing needs of church leaders and communities alike.

We have been introducing you to the 2021-2022 Center for Congregational Excellence team of staff and consultants over recent weeks. Today meet the three-person Children's Ministry Team of the Center for Congregational Excellence: Kim Bell, Dede Reilly, and Mimi Sanders.
 
Kim Bell
Children's Ministries Consultant, Experiential Discipleship/Retreats    

Q: Hi, Kim! Can you give us a one-sentence explanation of what your job title means?
I am here to assist Children's Ministers and churches attending conference Children's Retreats and to help us consider ways to plan these events into the future.

Q: In what ministry settings have you previously served? Currently serving?
I currently serve as Director of Community Connections for ConnecAbility in Dahlonega (since January 2021). I have previously served as Director at Glisson Camp and Retreat Center, as Conference Youth Coordinator, and on staff at Northside UMC.

Q: What are you most looking forward to about this year in ministry through the Center for Congregational Excellence?
The opportunity to gather at Glisson with children and their leaders from around the conference for an awesome weekend in September to Create!

James 1:2-4    

Q: Go to Sabbath and/or Spiritual Growth practice?
Prayer journaling

There is room for lots of ideas

Q:  What's a ministry innovation or adaptation you've encountered recently that everyone should know about?
Church in the Park--not just for quarantine lifestyle, but because it allows folks to feel more comfortable and to come as you are. It makes space for those who are curious and just "walking by"    

Q:  What's an event, training opportunity, etc. happening this year through your ministry that congregational leaders should know about?
Create! Children's Retreat at Glisson Camp and Retreat Center in September

Q:  What's your daily prayer for our North Georgia United Methodist Connection?
That we will all love our neighbor as ourself

Q: Welcome, DeDe! Can you give us a one-sentence explanation of what your job title means?
I coach big people to love little people to Jesus in community using best practices.

looking for relevant resources and ideation through community for relevant ministry with children and families today.    

Q: In what ministry settings have you previously served? Currently serving?
Hillside UMC - weekday & lay ministry, Canton First UMC - weekday ministry & laity assimilation, Waleska UMC - weekday and weekend ministry with families, Wesley Chapel UMC, Marietta - children's ministry, finance, and communication. I currently serve at McEachern Memorial UMC, Powder Springs, as director of Children's Ministry.

Q: What are you most looking forward to about this year in ministry through the Center for Congregational Excellence?
Coaching local church staff and laity to innovatively create developmentally appropriate faith formation experiences which are sticky to include all members of the family in the communities they serve.

Luke 1:37; John 12:7a

Fridays are Sabbath; Bible study in community; Shared community!

The Upcoming "Irrational Taco Tour" coming to a district near you for kidmin and family ministry innovation ideation

Mimi Sanders
Children's Ministry Consultant - Safe Sanctuary Development, Training, and Support    

Q: Hi, Mimi! Can you give us a one-sentence explanation of what your job title means?
Assisting individuals and churches in the North Georgia Conference with their development of Safe Sanctuary policies and procedures, assisting with training and addressing concerns about Safe Sanctuary processes in order to keep everyone safe!      

Q: Complete this sentence: "I'm here to support, equip and resource you, especially if you are..."
unsure about Safe Sanctuary procedures and best practices.    

Q: In what ministry settings have you previously served? Currently serving?
Currently serving as Director of Children's and Family Ministry at Tucker First UMC (since January 2009), previously served at Tucker First UMC as the Director of the Weekday Preschool, Assistant Director of Children's Ministry and a Weekday Preschool Teacher (January 2001-December 2008). From 1985 - 2000 I was employed as a Litigation Legal Assistant assisting attorneys with lawsuits involving personal injury and medical malpractice claims and workers' compensation claims.   

Q: What are you most looking forward to about this year in ministry through the Center for Congregational Excellence?
Working more closely with the Congregational Excellence staff to provide more resources for Safe Sanctuary training and getting to know more clergy, staff, and lay leaders in the North Georgia Conference.    

Q: What's your favorite scripture passage?
Deuteronomy 6:6-7 “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart, you shall teach them diligently to your children, and you shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when your rise.” 

Q: Go to Sabbath and/or Spiritual Growth practice?
Bible Study and Reading the Bible. I'm currently participating in Disciple and doing a chronological reading.

Q:  What's a ministry innovation or adaptation you've encountered recently that everyone should know about?
Shared ministry events. The Children's Ministry team is focusing on shared events within the conference and sharing our resources and expertise. There is no reason to "compete" with other churches, we should be working together to serve our communities and reach people for Christ.
