October is Clergy Appreciation Month

October is Clergy Appreciation Month. It is a time to say “thank you” to the people who may be most visible as preachers and teachers, but who, in reality, are on-call 24/7 standing with congregants and others to offer spiritual and other support in times of confusion and transition, times of heart-wrenching sorrow, and times of overwhelming joy. They laugh, cry, and pray with those they shepherd and serve.

2020 and 2021 have been especially challenging years for clergy. The impacts of COVID-19, social/racial injustice, and the ongoing uncertainty within the UMC have weighed heavily on clergy.

Consider how your congregation might show appreciation for the clergy you serve alongside. A few suggestions include:

  • Encourage pastors to use their vacation time and schedule renewal time.
  • Ensure clergy are aware of mental health and other well-being resources available in your conference.
