The Rev. Joseph Lowery, civil rights icon and United Methodist clergy, was a drum major for justice. We have lost a pillar of the church, a pillar of the city and this country, and a pillar of the witness of Jesus Christ.

Lowery died Friday night in his Atlanta home.

"Rev. Lowery was a prophetic voice and a force for justice," said Bishop Sue Haupert-Johnson. "His mantle falls upon us to live out his legacy and to continue his movement. We are thankful for his witness. He fought the good fight, he finished the race, he kept the faith."

He continues to be an example for us to follow.
