Welcome to Athens: Annual Conference Update for Monday June 12

Young Adults kick off Conference with their annual gathering! Photo by Rev. Dr. Joseph McBrayer.

Thousands of North Georgia United Methodists and guests began gathering in Athens today for the 2017 Annual Conference session. Bishop Sue Haupert-Johnson, our Conference's first female bishop, will preside over the three-day annual meeting June 13-15.This year we will focus on excellent worship that inspires action.

The sessions will be anchored by four worship experiences, each led by talented North Georgia United Methodists. The services themselves will progress through the stages of worship. We will begin Tuesday afternoon with "Gathering" (Opening Worship), move into "The Word Proclaimed" (Service of Remembrance), then "A Time of Response" (Ordination), and "Sending Forth" (Closing Worship).

When we're not gathering for worship, we'll be hearing reports on mission and ministry across our Conference, conducting the business of our Annual Conference, and gathering for shared meals and learning experiences, giving blood, hitting the streets for our annual 5k run/walk, and taking time for contemplative prayer or morning communion.

Among many happenings on Monday, young adults had late night treats at The Varsity, deacons gathered for a food truck dinner, the Common Table met, and there were two Fresh Expressions trainings.

Those not in Athens are invited to follow along this week by live stream. All sessions, beginning with opening worship on Tuesday, June 13, at 2 p.m., are available to stream live. Watch at www.ngumc.org/livestreamAC2017.
