There has been great change since our current districts were established. Cell phones, email, and video conferencing have become commonplace communication tools. There has been a rise in ubiquitous public meeting spaces (like Starbucks). There are new highways with resulting new traffic patterns, new neighborhoods, and new communities. There is greater population diversity. There have also been shifts in worship attendance patterns.
Your local church will still be part of a district and still have a district superintendent. Being part of a more efficient and balanced district, that better reflects the regions and geography of North Georgia today, will be an asset to local churches and pave the way for an even more connectional, collaborative, and relevant approach to our mission of making disciples for Christ for the transformation of the world.
The new structure represents more balance for the superintendents, as well. The districts themselves will be more cohesive, and the proposed structure will allow for greater collaboration on shared initiatives both within and between districts.
We have all size churches growing and doing great ministry for their communities Bartow, Gordon, Catoosa, Walker, Chattooga, Fannin, Gilmer, Whitfield, Murry, Floyd, Polk, Pickens, and Cherokee Counties. Many of our churches show size does not define or limit vitality. Every church of every size can be effective in reaching persons for Jesus Christ and have a vital ministry. Our mission is both through the connection and to our communities. Every church of every size should be both a house of worship and a service station. Our worship should call us and motivate us to and for service out into our communities.
The District mission statement is: “Our mission: is to enable churches to birth and mature disciples of Jesus Christ.” We seek to fulfill it through training, accountability, and mutual support.
If you have not found a church home in your community and your community is in Northwest Georgia, we would love to help you. You will find the United Methodist Churches of Northwest Georgia to be a warm service station where you can be served and be in service to others.
